# OS Updates (Preview)

In the OS Updates section, you can view an overview of the update status for the selected endpoint. You can see which quality and feature updates are installed, which updates are still pending, and how Windows Update management is configured for this endpoint.

## Usage

Use the OS Updates section to monitor the update status of an individual endpoint and identify possible causes for an outdated update status. At a glance, you can see which operating system updates are installed, whether additional updates are available, and whether a reboot is required. In addition, you can configure the update mode for the endpoint and review the update history to date.

The overview tiles show:

- **General:**
- - **Operating system**: the operating system currently installed on the endpoint
    - **Last inventory**: the time of the last inventory on the endpoint (timestamp in the tooltip), i.e., the last time the agent reported information about the endpoint’s status regarding operating system updates
- **Update status:**
- - **Feature update**: the latest Windows feature update installed on the endpoint (EOL may indicate “end-of-life” status)
    - **Quality update**: the latest Windows quality update installed on the endpoint (OOB may indicate “out-of-band” status)
- **Windows Update state:**
- - **Source**: the source the endpoint uses to search for and download Windows updates, e.g. Windows Update or WSUS server.
    - **Automatic updates**: Indicates whether automatic updates are **Enabled, Disabled by policy, Paused by policy**, or **Paused by user**. If they are paused, the tile also displays when the pause ends. An unknown status is indicated by **“-”**.
- The **Current update mode** tile shows whether an update mode has been set for the selected endpoint.
Select **Configure update mode** to set a mode for this endpoint.

    The following options are available:
**Note:** Configuring a default update mode for the entire environment does not affect a custom mode set on an individual endpoint.
- - **Enforced:** Proactive Hub regularly checks whether quality updates are available on the endpoint and ensures that they are installed immediately. Select this mode if you either do not yet have a solution for managing operating system updates or if you want to speed up the installation of security-related quality updates.
    - **Non-enforced:** Proactive Hub does not manage Windows updates. Select this mode if you already have a solution for managing operating system updates. Proactive Hub continues to collect data and can be used for monitoring purposes.

### Information about updates and status

#### **Quality updates:**

Quality updates are frequent, small- to medium-sized updates for the Windows operating system that fix issues and security vulnerabilities or provide minor new features. An endpoint with the latest quality update is considered up to date, while endpoints without the latest quality update are considered out of date. Microsoft regularly releases a quality update on the second Tuesday of every month (“Patch Day”). These updates are named after the month in which they were released. Additional updates may be released outside of this fixed cycle. These updates are referred to as out-of-band. If an out-of-band update is installed on the endpoint, it is labeled as “OOB” in the tile.

#### **Feature Updates:**

Feature updates are major updates for the Windows operating system that typically provide several new features. Microsoft releases about one to two such updates each year. If the latest feature update is not installed, this does not necessarily mean that the endpoint is outdated. However, it will not have access to the latest features. In addition, support for older feature updates may be discontinued. If this is the case, it is indicated by the EOL (end-of-life) label on the tile. It is recommended to update endpoints whose feature update has EOL status to the latest available feature update.

> Note
> Regardless of the Microsoft update cycle and the type of update (feature update or quality update), it is recommended that you always install the latest update.
